We have all heard of safe sex, but I have been learning that a lot of people still don’t know that they have to be safe with the sex toys they pick as well. Not all toys are created equal when it comes to safeness and one of the biggest culprits are those made of Jelly.
Now Jelly, while it is more cost-effective to use for production contain phthalates (this is linked to Lilly from Dangerous Lilly who goes on to do a great justice in explaining just what phthalates are.) But they also have been known to leak other questionable chemicals, which is what gives them the strange smells or even the oily feeling. These chemicals when they come in contact with your more sensitive areas can irritate or have other bad reactions like headaches or swelling. Now, this is not to say that everyone will experience this but honestly, why would you want to risk it?
But there are materials that are safe! So don’t fret. Now yes, sometimes they tend to be expensive depending on where you are looking but there are so many sites out there that carry them, with sales and specials that it’s not hard to get your hands on it.
My two new favorites since really getting into the safety of sex toys, are Glass and Silicone. Glass is awesome because its non-porous, strong and you can use any type of lube your heart desires no having to make sure you are using on or the other! Plus have you seen some of the glass toys out there? They are like works of art! Like the Icicles no. 12 or The Spectral Glass Dildo. Or check out the great selection from Sin Free Toys
Then there is Silicone, it is smooth and not porous. It can be fully disinfected by boiling it for 3 minutes or by throwing it into the top rack of your dishwasher. Silicone also repels dirt and bacteria and doesn’t fall apart with extended friction. So seriously, a toy that won’t be a lint magnet? That will stand the test of time? Who doesn’t want that? Plus like glass, there are so many to choose from…no matter what site you are looking at
For even more great information, check out Dangerous Lilly again (this time with Metis Black of Tantus) with the Ultimate Guide to Silicone Sex Toys.
This is just a taste of the array of materials that are either good or not so great for you when it comes to choosing what your toys are made of. I will be highlighting more in the coming weeks, both the good, the bad and the ugly!
